# What Google's AI Overviews are, and what makes a dealership page eligible to appear in one.

AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated summaries shown above the normal list of results, synthesized from multiple web sources with links out to them. They are a placement within Google Search, not a separate product, which means eligibility rides on the same foundation every ranking result already needs: a page has to be crawlable and indexable before it can be summarized. Nothing about AI Overviews changes what makes a page trustworthy: accurate, specific, well-structured content on a page a machine can read. What changes is the format of what gets shown, and the fact that being cited no longer requires being clicked. A dealership's AI Overviews eligibility question is really a question about its ordinary SEO foundation, asked with an AI-shaped answer.

## Key takeaways

- AI Overviews are a Google Search feature, not a separate product to optimize for. Normal indexing rules apply first: unindexable content cannot be summarized.
- Standard robots and snippet controls (nofollow, nosnippet, max-snippet, data-nosnippet) govern how, or whether, a page's content can appear in an AI Overview, the same as they govern a classic featured snippet.
- A citation in an AI Overview is not a click. Some searchers get their answer without visiting any source, which is why the underlying content still has to build trust on its own, not just win a placement.

## What an AI Overview is

An AI Overview is a synthesized answer generated from multiple web sources, shown at the top of the results page above the ordinary blue-link list, with links back to the sources it drew from. AI Overviews is Google's own feature, distinct from a third-party AI assistant like ChatGPT or Perplexity, and distinct from generative engine optimization as a general discipline (GEO covers all AI-mediated discovery; AI Overviews is one specific surface within it).

It is also distinct from a classic featured snippet, even though both lift a passage out of a page and place it prominently. A featured snippet quotes one page. An AI Overview can synthesize several, and it can restate the synthesis in its own words rather than quoting verbatim, which means a page can meaningfully inform an AI Overview's answer without ever being quoted directly or getting a click.

**Table: AI Overview vs. a classic featured snippet**

Both lift a passage to the top of the page; how they use a source, and what a dealership can measure, differs.

| | Featured snippet | AI Overview |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Sourcing | One page, quoted | Multiple pages, synthesized |
| Attribution | One visible source link | Several linked sources |
| Wording | Verbatim excerpt | Often paraphrased |
| What a dealership can control | Same as ordinary ranking + a clean answer passage | Same, plus being one of several sources worth citing |

## What makes a page eligible

Eligibility for an AI Overview follows the same floor as ordinary ranking eligibility: the page has to be crawlable, indexable, and free of a directive that blocks the feature specifically. Google documents that the standard snippet controls, a `nosnippet` meta tag, a `data-nosnippet` HTML attribute, or a `max-snippet` limit set to zero, apply to AI Overviews the same way they apply to a classic snippet. A page that has opted out of snippets has opted out of this too.

Beyond eligibility, there is no separate technical checklist for AI Overviews distinct from what already makes a page rank and what already makes it a good answer-engine-optimization candidate: a direct, self-contained answer near the top, accurate and consistent business details, and structured data that states facts explicitly instead of requiring a system to infer them. See [car dealer GEO](https://carbidedigital.io/car-dealer-geo) for the fuller foundation this depends on.

## What a dealership can do about it

Because AI Overviews draw from the same crawled, ranked index ordinary search results come from, the practical work is identical to the SEO and AEO foundation covered elsewhere on this site: crawlable pages, direct answers, accurate structured data, and consistent business facts across the web. There is no separate submission process and no paid placement route into an AI Overview.

What is worth tracking specifically is whether a dealership's own pages show up among the cited sources for its own high-intent questions, using a fixed, repeatable prompt set rather than a one-off screenshot. The full method is at [how to track AI citations](https://carbidedigital.io/insights/how-to-track-ai-citations-dealership).

## Direct answers

### What is an AI Overview?

An AI-generated summary Google shows above ordinary search results, synthesized from multiple web sources with links back to them, in response to a search query.

### Is an AI Overview the same as a featured snippet?

No. A featured snippet quotes one page verbatim. An AI Overview can synthesize and paraphrase several pages at once, which is why a page can inform an AI Overview's answer without being quoted directly or clicked.

### Does my dealership need to do anything special to appear in AI Overviews?

No separate submission process exists. Eligibility rides on the same foundation as ordinary ranking: a crawlable, indexable page with accurate, well-structured content.

### Can a page block itself from AI Overviews specifically?

Yes, using the same controls that govern classic snippets: a nosnippet meta tag, a data-nosnippet HTML attribute, or a max-snippet directive set to zero.

### Does AI Overviews replace normal Google search results?

No. The feature is shown alongside or above the ordinary results list, not a replacement for it, and it draws from the same crawled index.

### Can paid ads get a dealership into an AI Overview?

No. AI Overviews are generated from organic, crawled content, not from paid placements, the same way a classic featured snippet is not a paid slot.

### Why would a dealership's traffic drop even if it appears in an AI Overview?

Because a citation is not a click. Some searchers get a complete answer from the AI Overview itself and never visit a source page, even one they were shown.

### How is being cited in an AI Overview different from ranking first?

Ranking first earns a position in a list a person scrolls and chooses from. Being cited in an AI Overview means the content shaped an answer the person may read without visiting the site at all.

### Does structured data help a page appear in AI Overviews?

It helps a system verify and use facts confidently, the same role it plays in ordinary SEO and answer engine optimization; it is not a separate AI Overviews-specific markup requirement.

### Are AI Overviews the same thing as ChatGPT or Perplexity answers?

No. AI Overviews is a Google Search feature built on Google's own index. ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar tools are separate systems with their own retrieval and citation behavior.

### How often do AI Overviews appear?

The rate varies by query type and changes over time as Google adjusts the feature. No fixed rate exists for a dealership to rely on, which is part of why tracking a fixed prompt set over time beats judging from a single search.

### What is the single most useful thing a dealership can do to improve its odds here?

Fix the foundation an AI Overview and ordinary ranking both depend on: a crawlable site, a direct answer near the top of each page, and business details that agree everywhere they are stated.
