#What an AI Overview is
An AI Overview is a synthesized answer generated from multiple web sources, shown at the top of the results page above the ordinary blue-link list, with links back to the sources it drew from. AI Overviews is Google's own feature, distinct from a third-party AI assistant like ChatGPT or Perplexity, and distinct from generative engine optimization as a general discipline (GEO covers all AI-mediated discovery; AI Overviews is one specific surface within it).
It is also distinct from a classic featured snippet, even though both lift a passage out of a page and place it prominently. A featured snippet quotes one page. An AI Overview can synthesize several, and it can restate the synthesis in its own words rather than quoting verbatim, which means a page can meaningfully inform an AI Overview's answer without ever being quoted directly or getting a click.
TABLE
AI Overview vs. a classic featured snippet
Both lift a passage to the top of the page; how they use a source, and what a dealership can measure, differs.
| Featured snippet | AI Overview | |
|---|---|---|
| Sourcing | One page, quoted | Multiple pages, synthesized |
| Attribution | One visible source link | Several linked sources |
| Wording | Verbatim excerpt | Often paraphrased |
| What a dealership can control | Same as ordinary ranking + a clean answer passage | Same, plus being one of several sources worth citing |

#What makes a page eligible
Eligibility for an AI Overview follows the same floor as ordinary ranking eligibility: the page has to be crawlable, indexable, and free of a directive that blocks the feature specifically. Google documents that the standard snippet controls, a `nosnippet` meta tag, a `data-nosnippet` HTML attribute, or a `max-snippet` limit set to zero, apply to AI Overviews the same way they apply to a classic snippet. A page that has opted out of snippets has opted out of this too.
Beyond eligibility, there is no separate technical checklist for AI Overviews distinct from what already makes a page rank and what already makes it a good answer-engine-optimization candidate: a direct, self-contained answer near the top, accurate and consistent business details, and structured data that states facts explicitly instead of requiring a system to infer them. See car dealer GEO for the fuller foundation this depends on.
#What a dealership can do about it
Because AI Overviews draw from the same crawled, ranked index ordinary search results come from, the practical work is identical to the SEO and AEO foundation covered elsewhere on this site: crawlable pages, direct answers, accurate structured data, and consistent business facts across the web. There is no separate submission process and no paid placement route into an AI Overview.
What is worth tracking specifically is whether a dealership's own pages show up among the cited sources for its own high-intent questions, using a fixed, repeatable prompt set rather than a one-off screenshot. The full method is at how to track AI citations.
